Of course, you're unlikely to be running a welder at A continuously for any length of time, so you have to take that into account. I'd guess the average welding current across mig, arc and tig is less than half that. So say a bit less than one kettle. And most people aren't welding for 5 minutes without stopping very often, whereas a kettle is drawing all the time it's boiling. As said, you won't be welding continuously anyway, unless you're on a moving production line. So the question is pretty hypothetical, as you can only weld for so long before stopping. Hello, Thank you in advance for all the tips and answers. We have some lights and computer only in the warehouse, no machinery. On the bill it stated we used: kWh - this from using about 25 fluorescent lights each containing 6x32W tube lights and 6 computer stations, that's it.
The building has a power line from Consumers Energy at V, which was used for welding by previous occupant. The line is connected to a large panel where there is only one breaker one at this moment - for the step down transformer to V, which feeds smaller panel with all small V electrical outlets and ceiling lights.
My questions are: 1. How to calculate the power consumption of that transformer when it's in idle everything in the warehouse is shut off, but the transformer is on and buzzing? Yes No. OK Cancel.Sizing your generator wattage requirements is basically adding up the placarded wattage consumption figures from the appliances you will be using con currently and adding extra for starting requirements and contingency. Most Generators have their generating power expressed as kVA.
This is not the same as watts. Not surprisingly it works out as a larger figure and gives an impression that the generators power output is larger than it is. In very simple terms kVA is what is being produced by the generator and watts is what is being used. If your generators output is rated in kVA then you need to multiply it by 0.
So a 2 kVA generator will have an actual wattage output of watts. It is the continuous rating that that you need to know.

A long cry from the figure boldly written on the generator. Whilst technically they are not incorrect labelling the generator as 2. So for your calculations the continuously rated wattage output figure is what you need to know. When you add up all your wattage requirements you will find them placarded on the appliance or machine you will rarely have an accurate or reliable total.
This is because many electrical items use an additional surge to start. Appliances that place a resistive loads such as regular incandescent light bulbs, hair dryers, electric heaters use what they a placarded to use as they start and while in use. Other items such as electric motors will use considerably more when starting. And in the case of an electric motor attached to a pump as in an air compressor or a fridge compressor the load can be significantly higher.
Once you have calculated your total wattage requirements it is wise to add a contingency against future requirements and to cover against heavier start up loads than expected. As will most machinery it might be wise not to aim to run your generator at full capacity.
Always have spare capacity so as the generator is not constantly at full load operating speeds. Inverter generators are the newest form of generators. They use less fuel, are quieter and lighter than conventional generators. Most importantly they produce a cleaner electric current than non inverter generators. Most small generators run on petrol. Diesel engines are usually only found in larger or commercial duty generators. Whilst for extended long run applications diesel will undoubtedly be cheaper to run they will also be most expensive to purchase.

What about using three clamp on amp meters on the feed wires for the three phase?
Not most accurate but it should answer your question or lead you in the right direction. Calibrate the three to read the same current accurately by clamping them all on the same cable along with a known correct meter.
If you want the parameters for the secondary use a clamp on amp meter AC or DC depending upon the welder setting and a volt meter across it. Have a good welder strike an arc and maintain a consistent arc. Read the meters. My understanding from the OP is " how to calculate the incoming supply cable size and mcc rating.
This involves calculations as per applicable standards. What I understand from your post is to measure the current - which means the welding machine is working and the current to be measured. After measuring the current, it may call for replacing the cable or mcc or both if under-sized which is a trial and error basis.
